FLORIDA CHARTER SCHOOL STUDENTS WORK TO END HUNGER

Statewide Public Charter Schools Participate in Food Drive Benefiting Feeding Florida

During the month of May, the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools (FCPCS) is joining forces with Feeding Florida to collect food items to benefit Feeding Florida’s statewide network of food banks.

Charter schools across the state will participate in the food drive. All donations collected from the food drive will benefit local food banks. FCPCS will award a prize to the charter school that collects the most food.

Priority needs include: canned fruit (no sugar added); canned vegetables and beans; rice and pasta; canned meat or poultry; nonfat dry milk; baby food (no glass); powdered infant milk; granola bars; and peanut butter and jelly (no glass).

“We are excited to again partner with the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools to provide an opportunity for youth to make an impact in their community,” said Robin Safley, Executive Director of Feeding Florida. “Feeding Florida’s statewide network of Feeding America food banks work day in and day out to provide a healthy, adequate and consistent food supply to families facing hunger in our communities. This partnership allows us to provide public charter schools with the opportunity to directly impact their local food banks.”

Feeding Florida’s 14-member food bank network supports more than 2,600 local nonprofits throughout the state, which provide nutritious food directly to more than 3.3 million individuals and families in need to ensure a hunger-free Florida.

"Florida’s public charter schools are community-driven and proud to support Feeding Florida in this statewide program,” said Robert Haag, President of the FCPCS. “This partnership is a great way for students, teachers and staff members to make a difference in their communities.”

Statewide food banks will continue to receive donations from the charter school food drive throughout the month of May.
